Bruce Mangan received an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Cognitive Science and Aesthetics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. He has taught there since in various capacities, inaugurating the Scientific Approaches to Consciousness course, offered by the Psychology and Cognitive Science departments. He currently teaches at an experimental “college within a college,” the Fall Program for Freshmen. Mangan is one of the founding members of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness. His research centers on cognitive phenomenology, extending William James’ treatment of meaning and the ‘fringe’ of consciousness within the context of recent cognitive research and the relation of fringe phenomenology to nonconscious neural networks.
